NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reacted to the youth protests in Germany against the reform of military service.

Details: Journalists drew Rütte’s attention to the fact that young people in Germany are protesting against the draft, and asked how to motivate the young generation to fight for their country.

“There is a lot of debate about this. But when I look at Germany – and also at my own country, the Netherlands – I see a clear majority that understands the threat and the need to defend their country,” Rutte replied.

“I have no doubt: when things get serious, young people will be ready to take up arms. Putin has 140 million inhabitants. NATO countries together have about one billion. We are now stronger than Russia in every way,” he added.

On December 19, the German parliament finally approved the reform of military service.

The law aims to increase the number of Bundeswehr troops from the current approximately 184,000 soldiers to 255,000 to 270,000 by 2035.

The ruling coalition parties reached a compromise on a new model of military service in November.
