On September 19, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared the inadmissibility of compromises regarding the territorial status of Crimea after the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry, Radoslaw Sikorski, proposed holding a referendum there under certain conditions.

Details: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the territorial integrity of Ukraine “has never been and cannot be a subject for discussion or compromise”, and this is supported by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, partners and international law.

“Crimea is the center of gravity of the European security architecture. Its full restoration is possible only after the complete de-occupation of the entire territory of Ukraine, including the Ukrainian peninsula,” the department’s statement said.

There, they expressed expectations for the support of partners to force Russia to withdraw its troops from Crimea and hold it accountable for violations of international law and crimes committed.

“All efforts should be aimed at achieving these goals as soon as possible, and not satisfying, in one way or another, the appetites of the Kremlin at the expense of the interests of Ukraine and international law,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not clarify why it published this comment, but it appeared after the proposal of Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, which was circulated by the Ukrainian media, about how the status of Crimea can be resolved.

According to Sikorsky, Russia and Ukraine will not be able to agree on the status of Crimea, but “we could transfer it to a UN mandate with a mission to prepare a fair referendum after checking who are legal residents and so on… And we could postpone it’s for 20 years.”

The international community and Poland, in particular, do not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014. Sikorsky himself confirmed this position in February this year.

The European Union introduced sectoral sanctions against the Russian economy, which it repeatedly extended.

In June, the European Court of Human Rights announced the decision on the merits of the first interstate case “Ukraine v. Russia (Regarding Crimea)”, finding the aggressor state guilty of systematic violations of human rights on the occupied peninsula.
