Ukraine achieved the release of three of its citizens who were illegally detained in Venezuela – now they are safe and on their way to their families, Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga said.

“This became possible thanks to the coordinated efforts of Ukrainian diplomats and the support of the United States and our European partners,” he wrote on the Kh.

On the night of January 3, American troops struck military facilities in the capital of Venezuela, Caracas, and captured the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores. The US authorities do not consider Maduro to be the legitimate president of Venezuela and accuse him and Flores of conspiring to commit “narco-terrorism”, importing cocaine, storing weapons and explosive devices for use against the US.

On the evening of January 3, they were taken to the Detention Center in Brooklyn. They appeared before an American court.

Subsequently, US President Donald Trump announced that Venezuela had begun a large-scale release of political prisoners. Trump also expressed hope that these prisoners will remember how “lucky they were that the United States stepped in and did what needed to be done.”
