The document, which was initiated by Ukraine and its international partners, calls on Russia for immediate de -occupation and demilitarization of the Zaporizhzhya NPP and its return under the full control of the Ukrainian authorities.
“We are grateful to every country that supported this important document. 62 Votes for For a clear position of the civilized world: nuclear terrorism is unacceptable, and the Zaporizhzhia NPP occupied by Russia should be returned immediately under the control of Ukraine, – said the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Svetlana Grinchuk. “We will continue to work with the IAEA and our partners to ensure that each item is implemented.”
The Ministry of Energy noted that the resolution contains a direct call for the urgent withdrawal of all non -governmental and other personnel from the ZPP, and confirms that Zaporizhzhya NPP and all nuclear facilities in Ukraine should work under the full sovereign control of the competent Ukrainian bodies.
“The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine considers this resolution as a step towards the restoration of nuclear security. Ukraine insists on increasing international pressure on Russia in order to fully and unconditional implementation of all IAEA resolutions and the return of the Zaporizhzhya NPP under the control of Ukraine, ”the message reads.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also noted that the resolution confirmed the mandate of the IAEA mission to the NPP.
“Given the systemic attempts of the Russian Federation to question the legitimacy of the IAEA mission on the NPP and limit its access, the resolution adopted is of particular importance. It confirms the mandate and continuous work of the mission, which provides systemic international monitoring, allows timely to record the incidents, evaluate the risks and prevent the damage or operation of the station in dangerous mode, ”the message reads.
In addition, the ministry emphasized that the resolution also reflects the fact of the Russian attack on the Chernobyl zone, including damage to the new safe confinement.
“This approach clearly shows that Russia’s aggression against Ukrainian nuclear objects poses direct threats to international nuclear security. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine emphasizes that the Russian Federation should comply with the requirements of the resolution and previous decisions of the IAEA governing bodies, immediately terminate illegal actions on Ukrainian nuclear facilities and withdraw their troops from the territory of Zaporizhzhya NPP, ”the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized.
Zaporizhzhya NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Russian troops occupied the city of Energodar and located near him Zaporizhzhya NPP in early March 2022.
