Details: Responding to a question about the possible deployment of German troops in the buffer zone between Ukraine and Russia, Pistorius said that this “will be discussed when the time comes.”
“We are NATO’s largest partner in Europe. Therefore, it is obvious that we will play a certain role and must take responsibility,” said the German minister.
Pistorius believes that the key is how to create a level of security for Ukraine that would prevent a repeat attack by Russia in a few years.
He also announced that he will go to the USA in the near future to talk with the administration of US President-elect Donald Trump.
“The candidate for the post of US Defense Secretary has not yet been approved. However, we are interested in a quick meeting and exchange of views in Washington in early February,” Pistorius added.
In December 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi admitted that the idea of placing a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine as one of the safeguards against a new Russian attack was discussed at the meetings in Brussels, and said that he already “sees the positive” from some leaders.
Recently, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer assured that London is ready to play a “full role” in possible peacekeeping activities in Ukraine, although he does not currently see such a prospect.
At the same time, the Minister of Defense of Poland, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamys, ruled out sending peacekeepers to Ukraine after the war with Russia and explained that “within NATO, there should be greater burden sharing and diversification.”
