The message states that in November 2024, a “representation of resistance to the Putin regime” will appear in the US capital. The plans to open a kind of “embassy of the Russian opposition” were confirmed to the publication, in particular, by the future director of the representative office Oleksiy Sobchenko. He said that the project will be called Free Peoples of Russia House in English, and “Washington District Committee” in Russian.
It is reported that the “representation” is created on the initiative of individual members of the “Congress of People’s Deputies” – this is one of the political associations of Russian opposition émigrés. The Chairman of the Congress is ex-deputy of the Russian State Duma Ilya Ponomaryov.
The office will be located in a separate mansion two blocks from the Capitol. The building is bought with the money of sponsors (their names and the amount of the deal are not disclosed). Based on US real estate records, this house sold for $1.9 million in 2020, the current deal is not yet reflected in the records.
According to Sobchenko, it will be an “alternative Russian embassy”. Three flags will be placed in front of it: white-blue-white (it is used by some Russian oppositionists after the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine), the flag of the European Union and the flag of NATO – according to the founders of the project, these are future partners of Russia after the overthrow of the Putin regime.
It is planned that the building will be open every day, and it will host regular events of the Russian opposition. The first public event is planned after the US presidential election: the “embassy” will organize a debate between representatives of Democrats and Republicans on the topic “The policy of the new administration regarding the war in Ukraine.”
It is noted that the creators expect that American officials, congressmen, people who prepare solutions will come to the house, and the “embassy” will become a place where they can learn more about Russia.
The creators of the project assure that they have not yet conducted specific negotiations regarding joint work within the framework of this “embassy” with other representatives of the Russian opposition forces in exile, such as the Anti-Corruption Fund or the structures of Mikhail Khodorkovsky. However, they hope that other exiled oppositionists will join the work in the future.
