According to demographers, regional differences in the level of losses are related to socio-economic factors. In the poorest regions, the army acts as a social elevator, replacing the lack of opportunities in education and in the labor market. In Moscow, military careers are less popular. At the beginning of the war, the regions where large military units were placed – Krasnodar, Pskov, Dagestan, Buryatia.

“Regions where life expectancy is so low, where the likelihood of dying from an external reason and so high – they are more willing to participate in the war. Such people are moving not so much poverty as the lack of prospects, the feeling of losing anything,” the text says.
Researchers also point out that the losses of Tiva and Buryatia are much exceeding similar indicators in other national republics – for example, in Dagestan, Ingushetia, Tatarstan or Bashkortostan, they are twice or three times lower. According to the demographer, this indicates that the key role is played not by ethnic factors, but by social inequality.
“If sending to the front of national minorities were some conscious Kremlin policy, we would see a high level of loss among all national republics. But this is not. In Dagestan, Ingushetia, Tatarstan or Bashkortostan, the losses are lower than in Buryatia and Tiva, there are two or three times.
In addition, journalists explain that the real number of dead is much higher than open sources. Based on the analysis of obituaries, reports of relatives, photographs of burials and publications in local media, open sources allow only from 45% to 65% of the dead. This is due to the fact that some bodies remain on the battlefield, and their evacuation is complicated because of the danger of punches of drones or unwillingness to risk the lives of other military.
Given this assessment, the real number of losses by Russia can reach from 170,000 to 246,000 people. However, if you add to this, the so -called “DNR” and “LNR” fighters – which, according to the publication, is from 21,000 to 23,500 dead – the total number of those killed by the pro -Russian forces can range from 191,000 to 269,000.
Journalists say that open sources are used to calculate the dead, including reports of heads of regions, local administrations, media publications, posts of relatives and photographs from funeral. The confirmation of death is considered to be official or independent sources, posts of relatives or other publications containing photos of the burial place.
The basic calculation does not take into account the losses of the so -called “DNR” and “LNR”, but the Russians who voluntarily joined their units are included in the general list.
