“An attack on any nuclear power plant is absolutely unacceptable. In light of increased military activity at the ZNPP, I once again call for maximum restraint to prevent an obvious danger to its security, and for strict adherence to the five specific principles established by the IAEA in the UN Security Council for the protection of the facility and the seven indispensable pillars of nuclear security. of security during armed conflict, also defined by the IAEA,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

Earlier, on December 10, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that an unmanned aerial vehicle, the ownership of which was not specified in the report, struck and “seriously damaged” an IAEA official car, which was on its way to rotate the personnel of this UN structure at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. According to the IAEA, the agency’s employees were not injured.

Zaporizhzhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Russian troops occupied the city of Energodar and the nearby Zaporizhzhya NPP at the beginning of March 2022.

The territory of the station is periodically subjected to shelling, for which Ukraine and Russia blame each other. The Ukrainian authorities also stated that the Russian army used the nuclear power plant to store military equipment and deploy its servicemen.
