The International Atomic Energy Agency has announced the agreement of Ukraine and Russia to implement a local ceasefire, which will allow repairs to begin on the last backup power line to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZANP) of Ukraine, IAEA Director General Raphael Grossi said.

Ukrainian technicians are expected to start repair work on the 330 kV line, which was damaged and disconnected as a result of military operations on January 2, in the coming days. The IAEA notes that the outage left Europe’s largest nuclear power plant dependent on a single functioning 750 kV transmission line.

The IAEA team will monitor the repair work.

“The IAEA continues to work closely with both sides to ensure nuclear safety at the ZNPP and prevent a nuclear accident during a conflict. This temporary ceasefire, the fourth we have negotiated, demonstrates the indispensable role we continue to play,” Grossi said.

Six reactors of the Zaporizhzhya NPP have been in cold shutdown since 2022. The IAEA is constantly present at the facility to monitor security during shelling.

Russian forces seized Europe’s largest nuclear power plant with six reactors in the first weeks of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The plant does not generate electricity, but each side regularly accuses the other of hostilities that threaten nuclear safety.
