According to sources, a political decision on Hungary’s exit from the ISS was made a few weeks ago, but the government expected the US reaction. After February 5, President Donald Trump announced the imposition of sanctions against the ISS, the Hungarian authorities perceived it as “green light”.
It is expected that the Project of the Decree on the exit from the ISS will soon be published on the website of Parliament. If it is approved, Hungary will become the first EU country to emerge from the jurisdiction of the Hague Tribunal.
This step is associated with the recent warrant for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyaga issued by the MCS on charges of war crimes in the Gaza sector.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban made a statement of solidarity with Israel and invited Netanag to Budapest. If Hungary remains a member of the court during the visit, it will theoretically be obliged to detain Israeli prime minister. The government instead stated that they formally joined the ISS, but did not ratify the Roman Statute, so they do not consider themselves obliged to execute the court warrants.
On February 6, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing sanctions against the International Criminal Court for the Pursuing of the United States and their Allies. The document states that financial and visa sanctions are imposed against the persons involved in investigations into Americans or their allies, as well as their families. In particular, the decree calls the “unjustified” warrants for the arrest of the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyag and former Defense Minister Joava Galant. ”
