Details: Before the start of the meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kaspar Veldkamp positively assessed the decision of the United States to allow Ukraine to launch missile strikes with long-range missiles on the territory of Russia. At the same time, he expressed regret over the disclosure of this information, noting that “it would be better if it became a surprise for the Russians.”
Veldkamp confirmed that the Netherlands has long supported Ukraine’s right to use the weapons provided to it on the territory of Russia. The minister also noted that he does not see a risk of escalation of the conflict, calling it an “adequate response” to the participation of North Korean troops on the side of Russia.
“The Netherlands has repeatedly advocated that the weapons we supply to Ukraine can also be placed on the territory of Russia. After all, this is the territory of the aggressor,” Veldkamp said.
According to Veldkamp, the placement of long-range missiles by Ukraine is “fully permitted by international law” and complies with the UN Charter, in particular Article 51. “For a country that is defending itself, it is also allowed to place weapons on the territory of the aggressor. And this is Russia in this case,” he added .
Prehistory:
- On November 18, US State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller refused to comment on media reports about Ukraine’s alleged permission to use ATACMS missiles to strike deep into Russian territory.
- The high representative of the EU for foreign policy and security policy, Josep Borrell, said that the USA allowed Ukraine to strike on Russian territory to a depth of up to 300 kilometers.
- On November 17, The New York Times, citing sources in the American administration, reported that Ukraine had received US permission to use long-range missiles against military targets located in the Russian rear.
- According to the Axios portal, it is currently about the territory of the Kursk region, and the decision was conceived as a reaction to the involvement of North Korean troops in the war.
