Details: According to Funke, in the worst-case scenario of a possible attack by the Russian Federation on NATO, one of the main problems will be logistics. In particular, tens of thousands of allied soldiers will need to be ferried to the front lines in conditions where major road and rail routes may be damaged by Russian sabotage, cyberattacks or even missile strikes.

“It is important for us to keep Germany as a logistics center and to manage supply lines as smoothly as possible for as long as possible, which means that if one route fails, we will be able to use others,” the military said.
Also, a huge number of wounded can become a potential problem. The Bundeswehr has 5 of its own hospitals with a capacity of 1,800 beds, which will quickly be overwhelmed. Therefore, the German Armed Forces Support Command and the Federal Ministry of Health have divided the network of civilian hospitals into 4 sections that can be reserved for the wounded in a crisis situation.
Funke’s direct speech: “While in Afghanistan I had, unfortunately, a large but manageable number of wounded, now I have to plan for the possibility of receiving a thousand wounded a day. The more you look at it, the more complicated it becomes and the harder it is to imagine.”
Funke Command, which was created as a result of a major reorganization of the German armed forces last year, is now developing a modern version of a complex Cold War-era system for requisitioning (seizure – ed.) trucks, wagons, food and personnel on a colossal scale.
The general initiated “backup” agreements with the national railway operator Deutsche Bahn, according to which it must supply trains to transport military equipment 3 days after notification.
Another difficulty, according to Funke, is the German legal system, because certain military measures can only be used if two-thirds of the deputies vote to declare a “state of tension” or a “state of national defense”. He believes that this could be a difficult task for the parliament, where more than a third of the seats are held by the radical left and the Russian-friendly far-right.
Analysts warn that it may take too long for the country to emerge from a peaceful regime amid a fast-moving crisis. The Bundeswehr general added that the rigid division between peace and war is an outdated legacy of the 20th century, when hybrid warfare did not reach the level it is today.
Prehistory:
- In December 2025, following the Bundestag, the upper house of the German parliament, the Bundesrat, approved a law on the modernization of military service.
- Earlier, the Minister of Defense of the country Boris Pistorius expressed expectations that this year the Bundeswehr will be able to recruit 20,000 volunteers in view of the reform of the military service.
- In January, the Bundeswehr began sending questionnaires to 18-year-olds for military service selection.
