In early July, the Russian edition of Meduza reported that the Federal State Statistics Service of Russia (Rosststat) stopped reporting on the number of deaths in Russia. The American Institute for the Study of War, analyzing this news, suggested that this step is part of the Kremlin’s efforts to conceal the loss of Russia from war in Ukraine.
Earlier, waswed that Rosststat conceals data on the population, trying to hide the demographic problems of Russia, and the exclusion of demographic data in Rosstat’s reports, probably also aims to hide high losses of personnel of the Russian military.
Russia does not officially disclose its losses. Moscow last called the number of killed in September 2022 – then declared 5937 dead.
Kyiv also did not voice losses for a long time, stating that the data would be disclosed after the war. At the same time, on February 16, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with NBC News that since February 2022, Ukraine lost more than 46,000 soldiers and about 380,000 in the war.
British intelligence, citing the calculations of the Armed Forces General Staff, suggested that Russia has probably lost about 236,000 killed and injured in the war against Ukraine this year. Intelligence notes that the average daily rate in June was the lowest since April 2024.
