The first launch of the Australian rocket ERIS-1 lasted 14 seconds and ended with an explosion

The first launch of the Australian ERIS-1 missile, created by Gilmour Space, lasted only 14 seconds-after a short take-off, it fell and exploded. Despite the failure, Gilmour Space was called the launch “big step” for the Australian space industry.

The launch took place in the morning of July 30, 2025 from the site in the northeast of the country. The rocket engines operated for 23 seconds, of which 14 were during the flight. Then the rocket lost the thrust, fell to the ground and exploded.

ERIS-1 is a three-stage rocket capable of removing up to 215 kg (SSO) 500 km. It is equipped with Sirius engines of its own development, which during the ground tests reached a thrust of up to 110 kN. Judging by the start -up results, not all four first -degree engines worked properly.

“Of course, I would like more time in flight but also satisfied with that,” CEO said Gilmour Space Adam Gilmore.

The company also confirmed that all team members are safe and the collected data will be used for the next test.

The head of the Australian Space Agency Enrico Palermo recalled that the first launches are rarely successful, and the experience gained is important for future developments. Innovation Minister Tim Airs added that the test will help to strengthen the national space ecosystem.

Australia does not have its own full -fledged starting infrastructure. The preliminary launch of Gilmour Space had to be canceled in May due to a technical problem with a bug.
