A person who was over 65 years of age and reportedly had co-morbidities was hospitalized with influenza after contact with a flock of backyard birds and wild birds.
Louisiana health officials said their investigation has not identified any other cases of human illness linked to this patient’s infection.
Influenza experts warn that the H5N1 virus will still show itself as it spreads.
A patient from Louisiana was infected with the D1.1 avian influenza virus strain that circulates in wild birds and poultry. It differs from the variant that circulates among dairy cattle.
According to the World Health Organization, since 2003, there have been about 900 cases of bird flu in humans worldwide, and about half of them have died. That means the virus has a 50% fatality rate, making it extremely deadly – but experts don’t think it kills half the people it infects.
Because severe cases are more frequently reported than mild cases, mild cases are likely to be undercounted in these estimates.
