The ex-Minister of Justice of Poland, former Prosecutor General Zbigniew Zyobro, against whom 26 charges have been brought, received political asylum in Hungary.

Details: As Lewandowski wrote, the Hungarian government granted Zóbro political asylum “in connection with the actions of the prosecutor’s office and services subordinated to the government, which resulted in a series of actions bearing the hallmarks of politically motivated political repression.”

In addition, lawyer Lewandowski called the systematic use of “law enforcement agencies for repression against the political opposition in Poland, open statements about arrests and repression formulated by the politicians of the current ruling majority” as justification for granting asylum to the former minister.

He also pointed to “political pressure on judges in Poland when deciding cases related to the investigation into the Justice Fund” and a change in the method of appointing judges to the composition “bypassing the drawing of lots guaranteed by law.”

Lewandowski stated that the political asylum granted to Zybro “is also justified in light of the statements of members of the government (including the current Minister of Justice), who hint at the possibility of my client being kidnapped and illegally taken away by the services in a trunk to Poland.”

Zóbro himself also commented on granting him asylum in Hungary, noting that he chooses “the fight against political banditry and lawlessness.”

“I am resisting the progressive dictatorship. I am doing it in the name of the principles that have always guided me and because of which today I have become the object of personal revenge of Donald Tusk and his entourage. I have become the object of hunting and persecution because, as the Prosecutor General, I initiated numerous investigations into their corruption and thievery,” he said.

According to him, in this situation, he decided “to take advantage of the asylum granted to me by the Hungarian government due to political repression in Poland.”

Polish prosecutors accuse the former justice minister of running an organized crime group and using his position to commit criminal acts. He is suspected of committing 26 crimes. In particular, it is believed that Zyobro instructed his subordinates to break the law in order to provide subsidies from the Justice Fund to selected entities, interfered in the preparation of tender proposals and allowed funds to be provided to illegal entities.

Earlier, the media reported that shortly before Christmas, the Hungarian delegation to the EU sent a letter to all other delegations of the member states in Brussels, in which they informed that Hungary granted asylum to citizens of Poland. Their names were not mentioned.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland stated that they regret Hungary’s decision to grant asylum to two Polish citizens and believe that it damaged bilateral relations.
