Details: 500 MEPs voted for the plan to refuse the import of Russian gas. 120 spoke “against” and 32 abstained. The plan must now be formally approved by the EU Council before it can take effect. It is expected to be approved early next year.

According to the plan, Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be banned in the EU in early 2026 after the law comes into force. Instead, pipeline gas imports will be phased out by September 30, 2027.
The new law also sets fines that member states will apply to operators for violations.
During negotiations with the Danish presidency of the Council of the European Union, the members of the European Parliament insisted on banning any import of Russian oil. The European Commission has committed to present legislation on this issue in early 2026 so that the ban on Russian oil imports can enter into force as soon as possible, but no later than the end of 2027.
Members of the European Parliament also insisted on the approval of stricter conditions under which a temporary suspension of the ban on imports may take place in emergency situations related to the EU’s energy security.
To close loopholes and reduce the risk of circumvention, operators will have to provide customs with stricter and more detailed evidence of the country of production of their gas before importing or storing it.
We will remind:
- As previously “Evropeyska Pravda” reported that on December 10, the ambassadors of the European Union agreed to the plan gradual cessation of imports of Russian gas until the end of 2027.
- The EU assured that will not return to energy carriers from the Russian Federation even after the end of the war.
