The resolution was approved by 442 votes in favor, 98 against and 126 abstained.
“The MEPs greeted the proposal for the 30-day ceasefire reached on March 11. They expect Russia to agree and follow it, stopping all attacks on the Ukrainian civilian population, infrastructure and territory, ”the European Parliament’s website reads.
In order to defend Ukraine’s right to self-defense, the EU and its Member States must significantly increase the necessary assistance to the country, stated in the resolution.
To prevent further attacks of the Russian Federation, the European Parliament called for reliable security guarantees for Ukraine. The MEPs opposed any attempt to pressure Kiev in order to impose a “peace agreement” under the Kremlin. They also stressed that the EU should play a key role in security negotiations in Europe.
The MPs of the European Parliament congratulate the “coalition of wish” to potentially ensure the implementation of the final peace agreement under the leadership of Europe.
The European Parliament insists on confiscation of frozen Russian assets to finance the restoration of Ukraine. In addition, the resolution calls for strengthening sanctions against Russia and companies that help Moscow to circumvent restrictions and supply technologies for its military complex.
The resolutions of the European Parliament are not valid and are largely symbolic in nature – they express the political position of the MEP.
On March 11, a meeting of delegations of Ukraine and the United States took place in Saudi Arabia.
During the negotiations, Ukraine agreed with the proposal of the US side to introduce a ceasefire regime in the war with Russia for 30 days. The delegations also discussed the importance of humanitarian efforts as part of the peace process, in particular during the ceasefire regime, including the exchange of prisoners of war, the dismissal of retained civilians and the return of forced Ukrainian children.
US President Donald Trump has said that US and Russia representatives would meet for a truce discussion.
