“We are in a complex geopolitical and geoeconomic environment, and that is why the European Commission is considering strengthening its capabilities in the field of security and intelligence. Within this approach, the creation of a special unit within the General Secretariat is being considered,” Ujvari said.

He noted that the European Commission is currently “at the initial stage of developing this idea.”

“This will be an additional initiative that will complement the work of the Security Directorate of the Commission, as well as closely cooperate with the relevant services of the European External Action Service. That’s all for now – the concept is at the stage of development, discussions are ongoing, so I cannot tell you more at the moment,” said the spokesperson of the European Commission.

We will remind:

  • As “Evropeyska Pravda” reported, earlier in the mass media there was information that the European Commission had started creation of a new intelligence agency under President Ursula von der Leyen, in an effort to improve the use of information gathered by national intelligence agencies.
  • It will be recalled that the exchange of intelligence in the EU began after the terrorist attacks on the USA on September 11, 2001, which prompted the intelligence services of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Great Britain to start combining classified assessments of the state of affairs in the security sphere.
  • Subsequently, this process became more institutionalized, spread to other EU member states, and in 2011 was transferred to the EU diplomatic service.
  • Earlier, the military counterintelligence of Germany (MAD) stated that Russia increases espionage and destructive activities in the country.
  • In October, the National Prosecutor’s Office of Poland filed with the court in the city of Sosnovets, an indictment was filed against a Russian couple accused of espionage.
  • In September, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Austria declared persona non grata employee of the Russian embassy in connection with the espionage scandal in the Austrian oil, gas and chemical group OMV.
