“Climate changes have absolutely clear and indirect consequences for geopolitics, safety and stability,” Hucstra emphasized.

According to him, in the last year, representatives of the highest military leadership have repeatedly contacted him to discuss the impact of increasing sea level, drought, floods and forest fires on the armed forces, as well as the risks of migration and lack of resources as sources of conflict.

“The struggle for resources has always been part of wars. But because of the dramatic consequences of climatic changes, this factor will increase four times,” he emphasized.

The statement was against the backdrop of attempts by Donald Trump’s administration to reduce the priority of climate issues in NATO Strategy. Meanwhile, Hucher is faced with pressure on the need to unite EU countries around the achievement of climatic goals, including an ambitious goal – to make Europe the first climate neutral continent by 2050.

Despite the fact that security and economic challenges, especially on the EU Eastern flank through Russia’s aggressive policies, have displaced the climate from the EU top priority, Hucher emphasizes that security and climatic policies should go side by side, because global warming has a direct impact on military activity.

Already, the armies in several EU countries are involved in the fight against forest fires, and the US Department of Defense is declaring an increase in the number of operations related to climatic emergencies.

We will remind, earlier Hucher stated that the world is entering In the era of “geopolitical winter” Against the background of the strengthening of far -right forces in Europe and returning to power in the US Donald Trump.
