Details: Hungary and Slovakia voted against this law, but the decision was passed by a qualified majority (72% of the EU member states, representing 65% of the population – ed.).

According to the document, the import of Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas to the EU will be prohibited 6 weeks after the law enters into force.

However, there will be a transition period for member states’ existing contracts: the EU will finally stop importing Russian liquefied natural gas by the end of 2026, and pipeline gas by September 30, 2027.

Countries were allowed to delay the ban until November 1, 2027 at the latest if they have difficulty filling their gas storage facilities with gas from abroad ahead of the winter heating season.

Fines are provided for individuals and legal entities for non-compliance with the rules.

The EU will also check the country of gas production before allowing the import of gas into the territory of the bloc.
