Details: Georgia is not among those invited to the Forum on the enlargement of the European Union, which will be held in Brussels next week.

“Last week we presented our enlargement report on Georgia, and I think our position was stated quite clearly… The report shows again that Georgia is moving further and further away from its European path,” Mercier recalled.

According to him, the report states “a setback in the reforms necessary for joining the EU, which is unprecedented for a candidate country.”

“With regard to the process of rapprochement with the EU, as you know, in 2024 the European Council came to the conclusion that the process of Georgia’s accession to the EU has actually been stopped. Regarding our relations with the Georgian authorities… we have reduced the level of political contacts with the Georgian authorities, except for those aimed at finding ways out of the current situation,” the spokesperson of the European Commission emphasized.

“Given this situation, Georgia was not invited to the Enlargement Forum,” said Guillaume Mercier.

The Enlargement Forum on November 18 will bring together high-ranking speakers from EU member states, candidate countries and institutions, as well as influential representatives of civil society to discuss EU enlargement as a joint political and social project.

As “Europeyska Pravda” reported, the other day Prime Minister of Georgia Iraklii Kobakhidze said that Georgia wants to join the EUbut “without blackmail” from Brussels.

It will be recalled that the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that Georgia is currently a candidate country for EU membership.in name only“.

For his part, the EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Herchynskyi said that the report presented by the European Commission should become a sobering signal for the authorities of Georgia.

In response, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the EC report is being used to “voice unsubstantiated negative assessments of Georgia and to further political speculation“.
