“It is important for Belgium that all options are considered. Every possible approach must be carefully and transparently explored to ensure the best solution,” one of the sources said, adding that they had not yet seen those options.
The same interlocutor told Euronews that Belgium is “not yet disappointed” by the lack of other proposals from the European Commission, “but time is running out and we remain constructive.”
One European source told Euronews in turn that the EU still hopes to reach an agreement with Belgium, but admitted that time is running out.
The European Commission has proposed a plan that would allow EU governments to use up to 185 billion euros to support Ukraine – most of Russian sovereign assets currently frozen in Europe – without confiscating them.
But the approval of the plan was delayed due to the fears of Belgium, on whose territory the main part of these rockets is located.
The EU assured that the issue of using Russia’s frozen assets for financial support of Ukraine remains on the agenda, and the final decision will be made in December 2025.
