“My client testified before the House Ethics Committee that she witnessed Rep. Goetz having sex with a minor at a house party in Orlando in 2017,” said Joel Leppard.
Matt Goetz, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, resigned from Congress on Wednesday after Trump announced plans to nominate him for attorney general and denied all allegations of sexual harassment.
Leppard said the woman he represents testified before the House Ethics Committee in April.
He said he was representing two witnesses who testified to the Committee about Goetz.
“The American people deserve to know the truth about the man who is going to be the nation’s top law enforcement officer,” Leppard told NBC News.
ABC News first reported that Leppard said his client was testifying before the commission.
“Merrick Garland’s attorney general acquitted Matt Goetz and did not indict him. Are you saying Garland is part of the cover-up?” Getz’s spokesman said on Friday.
An investigation by the House Ethics Committee was launched in April 2021. It was postponed at the request of the US Department of Justice and resumed in 2023 after the department withdrew the delay request.
Some Republican senators say they want details of the committee’s investigation before a confirmation vote.
On Friday, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said he planned to ask the ethics committee not to release its report, saying that since Goetz is no longer in Congress, it would be a “terrible breach of protocol.”
The bipartisan, 10-member House Ethics Committee was scheduled to meet Friday to discuss the report on Goetz and whether it should be released, but Thursday’s meeting was canceled, the source said.
