When asked about the decision to split “Wicked” into two films, John M. Chu answered the following:
I had to come in and say, “We have to make a choice with this.” You can’t make a good one or two movies by dancing back and forth. Make two movies right now or we’ll never make these two movies good. .. And once you make that commitment, you can take this thing apart and find what we need.
It was really about stepping back from “Defying Gravity,” Chu explained.
We found that the perspective of the film had to be different from the series. In the show, Halinda descends on her bubble and is effectively the host of the evening. It’s a kind of vaudeville. She will draw you into the story.
John M. Chu explained that it’s important that in a film “the audience accepts the world you’re building within the first 10 minutes.”

It is noted that the decision to split the story into two parts allows each key moment, especially the ending of Defying Gravity, to shine in all its glory.
There are little moments that we just track to make Defying Gravity the end of this movie. Complete your emotional journey, be satisfied with the choices you made, and then the second movie is the aftermath.
