In Denmark, amid tensions with the United States, the UdenUSA (“Without the USA”) mobile app, which helps consumers identify and boycott American products, has grown in popularity.

Details: The UdenUSA app scans product barcodes in stores. If the product is made in the USA, a red cross appears on the screen with a call to return it to the shelf.

In recent weeks, UdenUSA has become the most popular free app in the Danish App Store. The program’s co-developer, 21-year-old Jonas Pipper, called his product “a weapon in the trade war.” According to him, the ability of ordinary citizens to send a signal to the United States is “pretty cool.” Pipper also said that the app is available in several languages, including German and English.

Although Denmark’s economy, with a population of 6 million, is about the size of Maryland and cannot significantly harm U.S. exports, the popularity of UdenUSA and a similar app, Made O Meter, shows that Europeans are deeply outraged by the Trump administration’s policies.

On January 20, the Danish pension fund AkademikerPension announced the sale of all US government bonds worth $100 million. Although this amount is insignificant for the market, in response to this, President Donald Trump threatened “big retribution” to anyone who gets rid of American assets.

In addition, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, rejected fears that Europe could massively support the boycott.

“Denmark’s investment in US Treasuries, like Denmark itself, is irrelevant,” Bessent said.

Deputy from the right-wing Danish People’s Party Anders Vistisen, who previously advocated closer ties with Trump, harshly criticized the US president during a speech in the European Parliament on January 21.

“Let me put it in words you might understand, Mr. President: go to…” (in the original f*ck off – ed.).

What preceded:

  • Relations between Denmark and the US have been strained since Trump stepped up plans to buy or annex Greenland. This caused outrage in Denmark, which views such statements as an encroachment on the kingdom’s sovereignty.
  • US Vice President J.D. Vance said the other day that the United States already provides implicit protection to Greenland, and therefore should participate in the distribution of its resources due to the strategic importance of the island.
