On December 22, Fico held a meeting in Moscow with Russian dictator Putin. The negotiations took place in the face-to-face format.

Fico explained that his visit was a response to the statement of President Volodymyr Zelensky, who opposed the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine, which allegedly harms Slovakia and endangers the production of electricity at the country’s nuclear power plants.

The agreement on the transit of Russian gas between Gazprom and Naftogaz through the territory of Ukraine expires on January 1, 2025.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that Fico does not want to participate in joint European work on energy independence from Russian gas. Instead, he receives discounts on the resource from the dictator Vladimir Putin, for which the aggressor country paid by sovereignty or shadow schemes”.
