Dmytrenko, who denies guilt, was sentenced to six years in prison under the article on intentional destruction or damage to the journalist’s property. He must also compensate about 100 thousand hryvnias for moral and material damage.
According to the court’s decision, announced at the end of last week, the verdict can be appealed to the Lviv Court of Appeal within thirty days from the day of its announcement.
On the night of January 30, 2020, 19-year-old Yakob Sarakhman, then a student of Lviv Polytechnic University, set fire to the car of a Radio Liberty journalist, according to the investigation. Proceedings were opened against him under Article 194 (deliberate destruction or damage to property) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He admitted his guilt in court and pointed to the customers.
Later, the Halytskyi District Court sentenced Sarakhman to 5 years of imprisonment with a 3-year probationary period, i.e. a suspension of the sentence, if he does not violate his duties, will be present at simultaneous interrogations, at the trial during the consideration of criminal proceedings against other persons and will testify against their testimony, if during this time he does not commit a crime.
In December 2020, the Security Service of Ukraine in the Lviv Region completed a pre-trial investigation into the customer and organizer of the car arson and forwarded the materials to the court.
The victims in the case are the spouses of Halyna and Vasyl Tereshchuk. Mykhailo Cherdak, a former police major of the Frankiv district police department of Lviv (who is suspected of organizing arson) and unemployed Vadym Dmytrenko (previously convicted) were recognized as suspects in the commission of a criminal offense by the investigation.
