On October 24, the Halytskyi District Court of Lviv extended the preventive measure in the form of detention for 60 days on the suspect in the murder of People’s Deputy, former chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andrii Parubiy, Lviv native Mykhailo Scelnikov.

As the correspondent of Radio Svoboda reports, the prosecutor’s office filed a request for a preventive measure in the form of detention without bail.

The prosecutor’s office stated the risks that otherwise the suspect might not come to the meeting. In addition, the prosecution emphasized that the person involved in the case is suspected of two crimes related to national security and intended to enter the territory of Russia.

The head of the Lviv regional prosecutor’s office, Mykola Meret, said that the suspect confessed to the murder and signed the interrogation protocol. According to him, evidence of his cooperation with the Russian Federation was found in the phone seized from the suspect, in particular, data that Scelnikov forwarded information about the location of important strategic objects to Russian curators.

“After the murder, we established the killer’s route of departure. They found a rover that was in the forest, burnt things. According to the DNA examination, it was found that the suspect was traveling on a bicycle. The investigation is ongoing. The suspect signed the interrogation protocol in which he confessed to the crime,” said the head of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The prosecutor did not answer the question about whether the weapon with which Andrii Parubiy was killed was found, asking to wait.

Scelnikov, who was at the court session on October 24, did not object to the prosecutor’s request. He refused to answer journalists’ questions.

On August 30, Andriy Parubiy, a participant in the Revolution of Dignity, a politician, a People’s Deputy, and the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada from 2016 to 2019, was shot dead in Lviv.

On September 1, security forces in Khmelnytskyi region detained Mykhailo Scelnikov, a 52-year-old resident of Lviv. On September 2, he was remanded in custody for 60 days without bail.

Scelnikov spoke with journalists before the start of the meeting and pleaded guilty to murder. He called the motive of his actions “personal revenge against the Ukrainian authorities.” At the same time, the suspect stated that the information in the mass media that he was blackmailed by the Russian special services was not true, and he did not cooperate with them. He has not yet commented on the new suspicion in the case.

On October 3, the Security Service of Ukraine announced that it had collected “indisputable evidence” indicating that the suspect in the murder of People’s Deputy, former Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andrii Parubiy acted on the orders of Russian special services. He was informed of another suspicion: of treason, the SBU said.

According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the case of the murder was investigated under the articles of illegal handling of weapons and the attack on the life of a people’s deputy of Ukraine, committed in connection with his state or public activities.
