“Ukraine filed a lawsuit with the UN court on February 26, 2022 with a complaint that the Russian Federation abuses the Convention on the Prevention of Genocide to justify the invasion”, – WRITE: www.radiosvoboda.org
According to the court press service, on November 18, 2024, the Russian Federation filed counter -arguments, which contain counter -claims, in the case of accusations of genocide in accordance with the Convention on the Crime of Genocide and Punishment for it (Ukraine against the Russian Federation). Subsequently, Ukraine denied the acceptability of counterclaims.
Therefore, the court invited Ukraine and the Russian Federation until May 20 and until September 22, 2025 to submit its positions on this issue. The court should then decide whether the counterclaims are permissible.
Ukraine filed a lawsuit with the UN court on February 26, 2022, with a complaint that the Russian Federation abuses the International Convention on the Prevention of Genocide to justify a full-scale invasion: announcing the so-called “special military operation” Putin that it aims to prevent genocide in East of Ukraine.
In February 2024, the UN Court in the Hague made a preliminary decision on Ukraine’s jurisdiction against Russia on “distortion of the concept of genocide”. The court ruled that the case “can be considered further”.
The court also agreed to study the issues of Ukraine’s actions on the Russian -speaking population and determine whether the genocide took place. ” However, he “rejected Kiev’s request to admit that Russia has used the Convention on Genocide as an occasion for invasion.”
The UN International Court of Justice “Only partially” recognized its jurisdiction in the case of Ukraine against the Russian Federation on “genocide”.
In particular, the court found that it has a jurisdiction to request Ukraine “to make a decision and to declare that there is no reliable evidence that Ukraine is responsible for committing a genocide in violation of the Convention on Genocide in Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.”
