In the appeal, the AKO noted that the Crimean Tatars, as the indigenous people of Crimea, “consistently support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, do not recognize the illegal referendum and the attempted annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014.”

At the same time, the Assembly explained that, rejecting manipulations (RF – ed.) with “self-determination”, they do not deny the right of the Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people of Crimea to self-determination.

“It is about the right of the Crimean Tatars to internal self-determination and the creation of national-territorial autonomy as part of sovereign Ukraine,” the statement reads.

The AKO also emphasized that international approaches to de-occupation and the future of Crimea should be formed taking into account the status of the Crimean Tatars as an indigenous people, their collective will and legitimate representative bodies.

What preceded:

  • Earlier, in an interview with the Turkish media, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergey Lavrov, said that the Russian Federation appealed to the UN with a request to recognize the “right” of the residents of Donbass and Crimea to self-determination.
