Details: According to a report by the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), between July 2012 and April 2021, Assad regime forces used barrel bombs at least 81,916 times in attacks on civilian settlements. As a result of these strikes, 11,087 civilians died, including 1,821 children and 1,780 women.

The provinces of Damascus, Aleppo, Deraa and Idlib were the most affected by barrel bombs. The highest number of human casualties was recorded in Aleppo.

Prehistory:

  • Human rights activists have found a mass grave near the Syrian capital of Damascus that contains the bodies of at least 100,000 people who died during the rule of former President Bashar al-Assad. The bodies of the murdered citizens who opposed Assad’s policies were taken from military hospitals, where they ended up after torture, to mass burial sites by order of the Syrian special services.
  • The Assad regime held power in Syria for 53 years and collapsed after a 12-day offensive by rebels led by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or the Levant Liberation Organization, ended on December 8 with the capture of the country’s capital, Damascus.
  • The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to establish all necessary contacts with representatives of the people of Syria and to correct Assad’s mistakes.
