The Ambassador of Ukraine to NATO announced the expansion of the range of countries purchasing American weapons for the Armed Forces

Ukraine’s ambassador to NATO, Alyona Hetmanchuk, claims that the number of countries that finance the purchase of weapons from the US for Ukraine under the PURL program should expand, Ukrainian diplomats managed to reduce the number of countries that ignore the initiative.

Details: Earlier it was reported that the two economic leaders of Europe – France and Italy – refused to support the project. There is currently no official data on whether their opinion has also changed, although there have been reports from sources about the possibility of a review of the position for France. To date, 25 countries have participated in PURL: 23 member countries and 2 partner countries, New Zealand and Australia.

Hetmanchuk also stated that Ukraine aims to “at least one or two new countries join the initiative” at every ministerial meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council or a meeting in the “Ramstein” format. The next such meeting will be held on February 12 with the participation of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov.

The ambassador hinted that it is possible to expand PURL funding beyond NATO. “It is very important that this distribution of the burden takes place not only between member countries, but also between NATO partner countries. Therefore, we appealed to those partner countries that have funds and are on the same page with the Alliance in terms of understanding support for Ukraine,” she said.

Alyona Hetmanchuk also commented on what exactly changes the position of the skeptic states. “I think the reason is that we gave them arguments why PURL is primarily a priority from the point of view of defense needs for Ukraine, and not, say, for the US Administration. We really proved, and the president personally did a lot for this, that it is very important for Ukraine,” she said.
