European regulators say Bluesky, an alternative to X (Twitter), which has been rapidly gaining popularity in recent months, does not meet the requirements of the EU Digital Services Act (DSA).
Bluesky violates the DSA’s disclosure requirements, the European Commission claims. But since Bluesky has not yet attracted so many users in the EU to be considered ““a very large online platform” under the DSA, the European regulator cannot impose requirements on Bluesky as it does with X or Threads, the Financial Time reports.
“All platforms in the EU. should have a dedicated page on their website showing how many users they have in the EU and where they are legally located. This is not the case with Bluesky today. This is not being followed,” said European Commission spokesman Thomas Rainier.
The new market leader? Bluesky is catching up with X and Threads in terms of active users
Rainier also added that the commission asked the governments of 27 member states to pay attention to the activity of the platform, in particular, to its offices in the EU. The platform has not yet been approached directly about this.
As a reminder, the DSA is designed to hold platforms legally responsible for the content posted on them. The law begins to apply to platforms after they get more than 45 million users on the block. This is currently about twice the total number of Bluesky users. The platform continues to grow rapidly after the US election and is expected to catch up with one of its main competitors, Meta’s Threads.
