Taiwan will not agree to the Washington’s proposal to produce half of the semiconductors needed for the US market in the US. This was stated by Viceremierka Taiwan and the chief trading Li-Tzun, after returning from negotiations in the United States, Focus Taiwan reports.

The initiative to divide production belongs to the US Secretary of Trade, Howard Lutnik. In a recent interview with Newsnation, he stated that Taiwan was produced by “50 to 50” chips.

“The conversation we spent with Taiwan was that it is vital for them to [США] They produced 50 percent of chips. The idea that I eat [Тайваню] I suggested that I was to divide the production of 50 by 50. We produce half, you produce half, ” – said Lutnik.

According to Chen Li-Tsun, the question “50 to 50” was not even discussed during a meeting with American representatives. Viceremierka stressed that the main attention in the negotiations was focused on tariffs: Taiwan seeks to reduce rates, abolish additional duties and reduce export fees. Currently, Taiwanese goods have a duty of 20%.

According to Lutnik, now about 95% of the US needs in chip is covered by production in Taiwan. He stressed that the purpose of the administration is to move a large part of production to the US territory to reduce dependence on imports.

According to CNBC, US President Donald Trump also criticized Taiwan dominance in semiconductors, accusing the island of theft of US business.

The proposal of Lutnik has caused a sharp reaction among Taiwan politicians. The chairman of the Opposition Party “Homindan” Eric Chu called it “operation and robbery”, stressing that no one has the right to undermine the position of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

“No one can sell Taiwan or TSMC, and no one can blow up the Taiwan silicon shield,” said Eric Chu.

The leader of the Taiwanese People’s Party Juan Go-chan said that the implementation of the plan would mean “washing the basics of the technological sector of the island.”

In the US, however, they insist that more balanced production will make Taiwan safer, while the island believes that it is the dominance in the production of chips that provides its strategic protection against China.
