The restructuring of the economy began just a few weeks after the overthrow of Bashar Assad’s regime on December 8. The authorities claim that it will fight corruption and waste, in particular, getting rid of the so-called “ghost officials”-people who received their salaries without actually working. However, the speed of change has provoked protests among civil servants who feared mass release on religious soil.
It is reported that a paramilitary, a state economy, which preferred a narrow circle of allies and family members, was organized for Assad and his father in Syria, while members of the Alavit family were widely represented in the public sector.
