The minister said that recent attacks by Russia have forced Ukraine’s three operating nuclear power plants to reduce power, sometimes trigger automatic emergency shutdowns, reduce production or shut down units – and each such situation is a direct threat.

In addition, the IAEA recently recorded numerous flights of drones near facilities in Rivne and Khmelnytskyi, which is classified as a significant security threat.

Direct speech: “Russian terror puts the whole of Europe at risk of a nuclear accident – partners and the media must pay attention to this and take measures to stop nuclear terrorists in Moscow.”

Details: According to him, the solutions are already ready: sanctions against Rosatom, amendments to the IAEA Charter proposed by Ukraine, and strengthening of air defense for Ukrainian defenders to prevent Russian strikes on the nuclear energy system.

What preceded: President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced on Saturday that as a result of Russian strikes on February 7, units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants reduced generation, one unit automatically shut down.

IAEA Director General Raphael Grossi said on Saturday that Ukraine’s nuclear power plants have suspended their operations as a result of Russia’s early-morning attack, and such strikes put nuclear safety at risk.
