Direct speech: “Russia recruits citizens of African countries using different methods. Some are offered money, others are deceived and they do not realize what they are signing up for. Or they do it under duress. Signing a contract is equivalent to a death sentence.”
More details: The minister emphasizes that foreign citizens in the Russian army have a sad fate: most of them are immediately sent to the so-called “meat assaults”, where they are quickly killed.
According to Sybiga, the Russian command understands that no one will bear responsibility for the killed foreigners, therefore they are considered as secondary, expendable human material. Most mercenaries do not live more than a month.
According to the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, foreigners have two options to avoid such a fate: either not to allow themselves to be recruited, or, if they are already on the front line, look for any opportunity to desert and surrender.
Sybiga said that most of the foreign mercenaries detained in Ukraine became prisoners of war during their first battle. All of them saved their lives. Ukraine treats prisoners of war in accordance with “all standards of international humanitarian law.” “Ukrainian captivity gives a chance for life and an opportunity to return to one’s country,” the country’s chief diplomat emphasized.
Direct speech: “I call on all African governments to issue public statements warning their citizens against joining the Russian army of aggression. Fighting for Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine is illegal, immoral and violates the UN Charter and international law…
Russia is trying to recruit people from other countries, not only citizens of African countries. We will provide more specific information about the regions and countries from which the Russian army of occupation recruits foreign nationals and then takes them captive.
We once again call on all governments to make every effort to thwart Russian recruitment schemes and to inform their citizens that such activities are illegal.”
