Suspect Arrested in Germany for 2025 Murder of Former Ukrainian Official

The National Police of Spain has announced the arrest of a suspect in Germany linked to the murder of Andriy Portnov, a former deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, which occurred in May 2025.

Agents from Madrid’s Homicide Investigation Unit traveled to the German city where the arrest took place, collaborating with the special operations group of the German Federal Criminal Police (BKA).

According to the investigation, the arrested individual is believed to have fired the shots that killed Portnov. A European arrest warrant and a search warrant for the suspect’s residence have been issued.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to clarify all circumstances surrounding the case.

  • Andriy Portnov, a former advisor to exiled Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, was shot dead in Madrid on May 21, 2025.
