Details: The Ministry of the Interior of Romania announced that starting January 1, 2025, the country will close 30 land crossing points – on the borders with Hungary and Bulgaria – in connection with the fact that it becomes a full member of the Schengen area. However, random checks of documents may still be carried out at the borders.

Prehistory:

  • On December 12, the Council of the EU decided to abolish controls at the land borders with Bulgaria and Romania from January 1, 2025. The full accession of countries to the Schengen area became possible after Austria gave it the “green light” after a months-long blockade.
  • At the beginning of 2024, Bulgaria and Romania “partially” joined Schengen – the decision to remove checks at airports and seaports came into force on March 30, 2024.
