Sports history of the day. Olympic champion with legs of different lengths, ligaments with crime and rams instead of Sigal

On July 6, the 75th anniversary of the birth of Sultan Rakhmanov, the Ukrainian Soviet weightlifter, the Olympic champion of 1980, the world and Europe champion, the owner of the 2 world, 5 all -Union and 14 national records.

This is the same case when it is appropriate to write “It could be full.” It is not 114 years since the birth of Juan Manuel Fanchio, but a very small real figure: I have a brother. Unfortunately, Sultan Rakhmanov died 22 years ago at the age of only 53 less …

Despite the exotic name for the Ukrainian athlete, patronymic and surname, Sultan Rakhmanov was a Ukrainian athlete not only at the place of residence (Dnipropetrovsk), but also for blood. His father is Sabur Rakhmanov, military, Karakalpak from Uzbekistan, and his mother, Tatiana Kovalenko – Ukrainian from the village of Dniprokamanka (Kamyansky district of Dnipropetrovsk region). They met when Tatiana worked at a Tashkent Military Hospital during the war after the war after the medical school.

The way to Olympus Sultanbay Saburovich Rahmanov was born on July 6, 1950 in the Karakalpak city of Turbul in Uzbekistan. In addition to him, the family still had Rustam, Azim, Thaira, Rakhim and Sister Zukhra.

The brothers played an important role in his life, however, different. As a child, rescuing the younger Rahim from under the wheels of the car, the Sultan seriously damaged his leg, and all his life he had one leg shorter than the other. And the older brother Rustam, who was engaged in boxing, became an example and motivator for the Sultan. Sultan followed him to the gym, and then, when Rustam moved to his mother’s home, to Dnipropetrovsk (now – Dnipro), Sultan, graduating from 9th grade, in 1966 also went to Ukraine. According to other sources, the whole Rahmanov family moved.

The Sultan studied at a physical education and trained in the boxing section. One day on the Dnieper beach was seen by a weightlifting coach Vladimir Ustich, who evaluated the guy’s physical information and persuaded him to go to the bar. The Sultan was lucky with coaches. His first mentor Ivan Pogorely was a boy for his second father, growing from him a person capable of struggle, assertive and strong. And then Edward Brovko, a bronze medalist of the World and Europe Championships in 1963, became a promising sultan. The demanding and harsh mentor, he took care of Rakhmanov so that he turned to him “Dad”.

The Sultan married very early – in Galina, a girl from the same village of Dniprovovamanka, where his Ukrainian mother was. She studied at a construction technical school. Galina then mentioned that the father of the athlete was categorically opposed that the son did not marry with a Muslim girl. And in three years he learned that the Sultan was married and recognized this fact.

With his family, the Sultan had to take care of her. However, he did not even have his home. In 1973, Edward Brovko arranged a relocation of Rakhmanov to the neighboring Dneprodzerzhinsk (now Kamianske), where Athlete, already a master of sports, was designed to the Dnieper Metallurgical Plant and gave an apartment. The Sultan trained according to the individual plan in the sports club “Dzerzhinka”, and Brovko came to him several times a week. In 1974, Rahmanov entered the Dnipropetrovsk State Institute of Physical Education (He graduated from the Olympic champion in 1980).

The athlete, who, according to doctors, did not even have to walk normally (through the legs of different lengths), he was difficult to train daily, raising 30-40 tons of iron. At the peak of the form, he weighed 145 kg with a height of 188 cm. His crown exercise was a jerk: all his records of the USSR Rahmanov put it in a jerk, for the first time doing it in 1976 at the All -Union Command Championship of VCRPS in Lipetsk (190 kg). He was the first in the world to overcome 200 kg in a jerk (1978, Kyiv).

The persistent and selfless work has brought its results. In 1978, at the World Cup in Goetsberg (USA) Rakhmanov, speaking the first number of the USSR national team in the absence of the legendary Vasily Alekseev, received a silver medal, giving way to Jurgen Hoiser from GDR. For an equal result in the amount (417, 5 kg), the Ukrainian lost due to their greater weight. And next year, the Sultan confidently took the revenge in thessaloniki, winning in all types of the program: a jerk – 192.5 kg, impetus – 237.5 kg, the sum of doubled – 430 kg.

Olympic triumph and gold earrings Becoming the world champion, Sultan Rakhmanov received the title “Honored Master of Sports of the USSR”. At that time, he had already returned to Dnipropetrovsk and trained Edward Brovka, speaking for DST “Avangard”. Leaving the Dneprodzerzhinsk Sultan forced that the workers of the DMZ shop, where it was simply recorded, were dissatisfied with this condition of things.

Edward Brovko was a Jew, and then he was not released abroad. Rahmanov was repeatedly hinted that it would be good to change the trainer, but he could not even imagine it.

Fortunately, both of them were held in Moscow in 1980, so there were no problems with traveling abroad for Brovka by definition. That year, Rahmanov won the European Championship in Belgrade (May 1980) and was preparing to go to the Olympics with the first number. But a week before the beginning of the games, he learned that the main athlete decided to put Vasily Alekseev, who very much wanted to become an Olympic champion for the third time. Then Brovko attracted the mechanism of Dnipropetrovsk fellowship: he called Vladimir Shcherbytsky, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, and the one – to his good friend Leonid Brezhnev. After that, Sultan Rahmanov became the first number of the USSR national team. At least, this was what his widow Galina told.

But the well -known undoubted fact. On July 30, 1980, the Ukrainian heavyweight was justified at the Moscow Sports Complex “Izmailovo” with the Izmailovo. Vasily Alekseev caught a bagel in a jerk: he did not cope with a starting weight of 180 kg. And Sultan Rakhmanov raised 195 kg, ahead of Jurgen Choiser by 12.5 kg. In the impetus, the Dniprovsky Bogatyr recorded 245 kg against 227.5 kg in the German. In the amount of dueling, Rahmanov went around Hoiser by 30 (!) Kg!

The Sultan won the Olympiad of the Red Banner and 3,000 rubles of the award. He gave out the debts and bought his wife gold earrings.

In 1981, the Sultan won the USSR Championship in Novosibirsk with 440 kg. It was his third All -Union title (after 1978 and 1979) and the last triumph in the big sport. After 30 years, the Sultan began to tear muscles on his feet – old injuries But huge loads were signs …

Life after sports: Crime, Stephen Sigal and Barana After graduating from his sports career, Rahmanov was able to devote more time to his family – Galina’s wife, daughter Tatiana and son Taira, who saw little during constant training, meetings and competitions. Galina mentioned that once returning from a foreign trip, the Sultan brought beautiful toys to children. She complained that she lived very poor in her childhood and had no such toys and dolls. Then the athlete jumped out of the house and returned with a wonderful doll, which he purchased at the Berezka foreign currency store …

There is little public information about his activities in 1980-90. All the memoirs of relatives and friends are reduced to the memories of how good, sociable, cheerful and generous man was Sultan Rahmanov, how he helped many people, how he was engaged in charity.

However, there is also information that the champion has been related to criminal circles, in particular with the famous Dnipropetrovsk authority Alexander Milchenko on Klitschko Matros. I can say how a resident of Zaporizhzhia then we knew the nickname sailor, and rumors that Sultan Rahmanov is preparing footage for bandits in the Bogatyr sports club (I have seen this club many times – ed.), too, most likely, were unfounded …

These were times: restructuring, collapse of the Union, evil 90s. Then many athletes, mostly in struggle, boxing, weightlifting, went to the criminal world. What was, it was …

However, there were only good deeds. Rakhmanov was known to have a private car enterprise. Since 2000, he has been the President of the International Association of Veterans and Disabilities of Sports “Medetis”, and often visited orphanages. He did a lot for the city of Dnipro, assisted those who had drug problems, supported the Dnipropetrovsk Choice Association, where they not only treated but also engaged in rehabilitation.

Rakhmanov was Honorary President of the Federation of Aikido of Ukraine.

An interesting story was told by Dniprovsky writer Arthur Balaev. In 2000, Sultan Rahmanov decided to celebrate his 50th anniversary with a major action at Metallurg. He invited the Hollywood Star and Master Aikido Stephen Sigal to the Hollywood holiday. He invited $ 300,000. Of course, the Sultan had no such amount, but he calmly said, “I will find him a decent replacement.” During the festivities at the stadium, when two Central Asian rams were released on the field, which began to be at all the joy of the audience, he said: “And here is the replacement of Stephen Sigal.” By the way, Sigal really turned out to be a real ram: with his Russian citizenship and cotton views.

Among the closest friends of the Sultan were Fellow-Stangists: Dniprovets Yuri Zaitsev, Olympic Champion of Montreal-1976 (up to 110 kg), and Kiev Anatoliy Pisarenko, three-time world champion, Rakhmanov heir to the USSR national.

Since 1996, the All -Ukrainian Athletics Tournament “Bogatyri Dnieper” has been held in Kamyansky in honor of (and then in memory) of Sultan Rakhmanov.

In recent years, the Sultan has been very ill: overweight (over 200 kg), big health problems – barely walked.

On May 5, 2003, a prominent barbecue died of a heart attack in Tatiana’s daughter in their country house in Dniprokamanka. He was buried in the Sursko-Lithuanian cemetery in the Dnieper. There is no death on the monument, there is a date of birth and epitaph “Who said I died? I am in your souls and hearts.”

Along with the Sultan, his mother, as well as coaches, Ivan Pogorevich and Edward Pavlovich Brovko, were buried.

In 2009, Sultan Rahmanov posthumously was given the title of Honorary Citizen of Dnipropetrovsk. On September 23, 2010, a memorial plaque was erected in the Dnieper on the house where the athlete (Yavornitsky, 45 B) lived.
