According to the publication, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who organized the teleconference, said it was important for Zelensky to find ways to negotiate with the US on territorial issues, security guarantees and reconstruction. Mertz asked the Ukrainian president “not to go too far” and at the same time to be “careful”.

A spokeswoman for the German government told the publication that the federal government does not comment on the details of confidential negotiations. At the same time, another participant in the conversation confirmed that the content of the teleconference was reflected correctly, but did not want to confirm individual quotes, because it was a confidential conversation.

According to the text of the transcript, French President Emmanuel Macron urged Europeans to speed up work on security guarantees and finalize their participation as soon as possible.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, according to the transcript, said something similar: Europeans should not be seen as those who slow down the process. However, several heads of government have indicated that security guarantees or even the deployment of troops require consideration by parliaments.

During Saturday’s teleconference, the prime ministers of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, Mette Frederiksen, Ulf Kristersson and Jonas Gar Støre, asked President Zelensky after his meeting with Trump to inform in as much detail as possible about the promises of the Americans regarding possible security guarantees.

The phrase that it should be seen “on paper” was repeatedly heard, as well as the advice that the Ukrainian president should not make official concessions on territorial issues without firm commitments regarding security guarantees.

Mertz also emphasized that they are ready to be part of the peace agreement, but must know its content before signing.

According to the transcript, many heads of state and government advised Zelensky to ask Trump about Russia’s position on the current version of the peace plan.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloni, Macron and Mertz also urged Zelensky to ask Trump what he would do if Russia says no to the peace plan that Europeans and Ukraine have negotiated with the Americans in recent weeks. These 20 points differ significantly from the 28-point document, which was heavily influenced by Russia and which was the starting point for the new negotiations.

Even after the meeting between Trump and Zelensky, European diplomats said that it was not clear what position Russia would take on territorial issues.

On Tuesday, December 30, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that part of the documents for the settlement of the war, which were developed as part of the negotiation process, will be ready for signing in January.

Zelenskyi also talked about discussions with the USA potential deployment of American troops in Ukraine within the framework of security guarantees.
