Speedtest was blocked in Russia

Yevgeny Demkivsky Author of news Mezha.media and GIK. I write about technologies, cinema and games. Perhaps about games with a little more passion.

Roskomnadzor has restricted access to the SPEEDTEST service from Ookla in Russia. This was reported by the Russian media “Medusa”. The blocking was explained by the “threats to the security of the public communication network and the Russian Internet segment”.

The department advised users to switch to “trusted Russian services”, in particular to “Svit” – an application for checking the speed of the connection, which was specially developed in 2024.

SPEEDTEST was reported in October 2024. Roskomnadzor then stated that the service could be restricted in case of threats to the stability or safety of the Russian network infrastructure. In the same month, the court in Moscow fined Ookla by 6 million rubles for refusing to localize users’ data in Russia.

The service blocking occurred against the backdrop of regular disconnections of mobile Internet in different regions of the country. According to the initiative “to the cords”, by the end of June, the restrictions were covered by more than half of the regions of the Russian Federation.

If you didn’t know, SpeedTest is a well-known online service for measuring the speed of the Internet connection. It was created by Ookla. The service allows you to check the speed of loading, shipment and ping. Speedtest is used worldwide to evaluate the quality of the Internet and set up a network.
