The National Police of Spain has announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Andriy Portnov, a former deputy head of the administration under exiled President Viktor Yanukovych, in Germany.
The suspect was apprehended in the town of Heinsberg, located in North Rhine-Westphalia. Spanish authorities believe the individual fired at Portnov on the day of his murder, May 21, 2025.
A European arrest warrant and a European investigation order were issued to search the suspect’s residence.
Spanish courts are currently overseeing the murder case involving Portnov and the arrest of the suspect. The preliminary proceedings in Portnov’s case remain confidential as per court directives.
Details regarding the suspect, including age, gender, and nationality, have not been disclosed by the Spanish police.
On May 21, 2025, Andriy Portnov was shot near an American school close to Madrid, Spain. The incident occurred around 9:15 AM local time, following a call received by the National Police regarding a person with gunshot wounds on a public street.
Portnov resided in La Moraleja, near Madrid, where his daughters attended the American school.
