The polling stations opened at 6:00 local time and will work until 8:00 pm. According to the National Election Commission, about 2.5 million voters, or 5.7% of the electorate, voted at 9:00.
A total of about 44.4 million voters were registered, of which more than 15 million have exercised the right of early voting last week.
Elections take place after President Yun Suk John’s impeachment and the decision of the Constitutional Court, adopted in response to his unsuccessful attempt to introduce martial law in December 2024 in the country.
Yun stated that the decision to introduce martial law was forced – they say, it was a response to the long inaction of parliament and a favorable attitude of the opposition to North Korea.
Yun became the third president, who has been resigned for the last 21 years.
The favorite of the election race is a candidate from the opposition Democratic Party Lee Zhage Mun, who is ahead of Kim Moon Su – a candidate from the ruling conservative party who has similar political views with his former president. The third candidate – Lee Zhong Juh from the Reform Party – actually divided the voices of a conservative electorate.
Foreign policy has become the main theme of the election campaign. Although all three candidates generally support the continuation of tripartite cooperation with the United States and Japan, Lee Jae Muun stands for a more balanced relationship with Beijing and does not exclude dialogue with North Korea. Its opponent Kim Mun Su, on the contrary, takes a rigid position on the DPRK and seeks to conclude a nuclear alliance from the United States NATO.
