China expands its nuclear arsenal faster than any other country. This is stated in the report of the independent SIPRI International Institute.

In 2025, the PRC owns 600 nuclear warheads-100 units more than 2024. According to SIPRI, the nuclear arsenal of the country has increased at this rate since 2023.

“As of January 2025, China has completed or almost completed the construction of about 350 new mines for intercontinental ballistic missiles in three large desert areas in the north of the country and three mountainous areas in the east,” SIPRI said.

Experts pay attention – depending on how China decides to structure its armed forces, by the end of the decade it can potentially have at least the same number of intercontinental ballistic missiles (IBR) as Russia or the USA. China now ranks third in the world in nuclear warheads.

At the same time, SIPRI also noted that almost all nine countries that have nuclear weapons in 2024 continued intensive nuclear weapons modernization programs, updating existing weapons and adding new versions.

In 2025, the list of states with nuclear warheads, according to the Institute, looks like: the United States (5177 units), the Russian Federation (5459), the United Kingdom (225), France (290), China (600), India (180), Pakistan (170), North Korea (50).

“From the general world reserve, which in January 2025 was approximately 12 241 warheads, about 9614 were in military reserves for potential use,” SIPRi said.

Experts of the organization also believe that the era of reducing the number of nuclear weapons in the world, which has lasted since the end of the Cold War, is coming to an end. Instead, there is a clear tendency to grow nuclear arsenals, exacerbate nuclear rhetoric and refuse to control weapons control.

By the way, after the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine voluntarily abandoned its nuclear arsenal in 1994, signing the Budapest Memorandum. Now our country does not own nuclear weapons and adheres to the status of a nuclear state.
