Polish Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorsky Sarcastically commented on Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban, who stated that he was going “to hold a referendum ”on Ukraine’s membership in the EU.
“Hungary intends to hold a referendum on the future membership of Ukraine in the European Union. And I would be interested to learn about the results of the EU referendum about Hungary’s membership of Orban, ”Sikorsky wrote on his page on the social network X.
On March 7, Orban wrote on his page on the social network X, which is about to put “The issue of membership of Ukraine in the EU to voting in Hungary, and the Hungarian people will say their word ”, and the Hungarian authorities will fulfill its will.
Politico reported that Orban announced that he would “gather the people’s opinion” about Ukraine’s accession to the EU through a poll by mail. The publication emphasizes that this vote has no binding force and will almost certainly be directed against Kiev.
Orban announced this survey before the journalists after the emergency summit of all 27 EU leaders in Brussels, where Hungary was the only country that did not support a joint statement to support Ukraine’s weapons.
“We have a so -called national consultation scheme, which we regularly use to gather the opinion of the people, so we will use the same scheme now, ”he said.
Since 2010, the Orban government has initiated more than a dozen so -called national consultations on various issues, from migration to LGBTK+.
These are the campaigns that all the Hungarians who are entitled to vote receive letters that ask questions and suggest you choose one of the answer options, sometimes just answer “Yes ”or“ no ”.
The questions are often formulated in a pre -emptive manner, and the vast majority of answers, according to the Hungarian media, coincide with the government’s position, while opposition and civil society criticize them and call propaganda instruments.
For example, during national consultations on EU migration policy in 2023, the Hungarians asked if they support Brussels Creation “ghetto for migrants ”in Hungary. The survey was attended by less than 20 percent of the Hungarians, but 99% of those who participated were answered.
On March 6, it was reported that Orban blocked the EU Communique, in which the block pledged to continue to maintain the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, in particular before the illegal annexation of Crimea and the full -scale invasion of the Russian Federation.
