Last week, a federal judge ruled that Trump and the Defense Department illegally deployed the National Guard to Washington. Although the decision was delayed to allow time for an appeal, adding more National Guardsmen would run counter to the decision, CNN writes.

In his ruling, the judge noted a “substantial risk” that the deployment of troops “would lead to a dangerous or deadly confrontation that could have catastrophic consequences for public safety.”

What preceded: Two members of the National Guard were shot and killed near the White House in Washington on Wednesday, officials said. This led to the closure of the building amid the absence of US President Donald Trump.
