The name Iryna’s Azure was given to insects that mainly live in the state of South Carolina in the USA. Butterflies have light blue wings, but can also have a distinct purple-blue coloration.
“It will survive most other ways of honoring, because a butterfly is a living organism. Irina’s name will be immortalized in a butterfly.”– told ABC News Scientist, President and Director of the International Lepidoptera Research Harry Pavulaan.

Iryna’s Azure butterflies were first noticed by researcher Ronald Gatrell in 1985, but the insects did not have an official name then. In 2018, Harry Pavulaan went to South Carolina, where he studied these creatures.
A few years later, the scientist determined that this insect is “the first known case of hybrid introgression” among butterflies of the Azure family (genus Azure) – the result of the transfer of genes from one species to another through crossing.
The scientist had already managed to determine the name for the new creature when he learned about the murder of Ukrainian Iryna Zarutska. Due to her death, Pavulaan decided to speed up the work on the article and name the butterfly in honor of the girl.
What is known about the murder of a Ukrainian woman? Ukrainian Iryna Zarutska moved to the United States in an attempt to escape the war. Abroad, the 23-year-old woman studied at a college, worked at a pizzeria, helped at a center for the elderly, took care of neighborhood animals and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian’s assistant.
On August 22, a girl was fatally stabbed on a train in Charlotte. From the injuries she received died in place Decarlos Brown, a 34-year-old homeless man who was previously convicted, was arrested in the case and is in custody.
The man has been charged, including federal charges, for which he can be sentenced up to death penalty.
