Recently, there have been changes in Ukrainian spelling, but they did not affect the patronymic of Serhiy — the spelling rules remain the same as they were before.
We speak correctly. 10 very common mistakes in the Ukrainian language
The Ukrainian language provides a single ending for male patronymic names – ovych (-yovych). For example:
- Oleksandr — Oleksandrovich;
- Andrii — Andriyovych;
- Nikita – Mykytovych.
We tell you how to correctly form a patronymic name from the name Serhiy.
Serhiy is the patronymic
The correct patronymic for Serhiy in Ukrainian is Serhiyovych for men. Option Sergievich is considered erroneous.
In order to form a patronymic for a woman, the suffix -ivna or -ivna is added to the name. For example:
- Oleksandr — Oleksandrivna;
- Andrii – Andriivna;
- Nikita – Mykytivna.
According to this, girls and women whose father’s name is Serhii, have Serhiivna as their patronymic.
It should be noted that the new spelling, which appeared in 2019, involves some changes in the spelling of patronymic names, but they affected only one name – Igor. Now the correct form is Igor’ovych, although before it was necessary to write Igorovych – according to general language recommendations. Despite this, inaccuracies were often encountered even in official documents. Now you have to forget about both versions and write only Igor’ovych.
